Kandy, a bustling city in the centre of the country, previously the capital until the colonising British made Colombo the capital. Best known for the most sacred Buddhist Temple of The Tooth Relic, and as a centre for traditional Kandian dance and music.
Matale, situated between Dambulla and Kandy, is home to the Sri Muthumariamman Thevasthanam, an important Hindu temple with a tower covered in hundreds of carvings.
The Nuwara Eliya District is home to hundreds of tea plantations, with tea bushes stretching over the hills all around. We stopped for a tour at the Glenloch Tea Factory and spent the night in a former tea planters club, now the Bandarawela Hotel.
